How Do We Know That Our Counseling Works?

We do our research! We strive to follow, to the best of our ability, all four components of the ASCA National Model: Foundation, Management, Delivery, and Accountability.

1. Foundation: Our school's vision and mission statements drive our program's success!

2. Management: Our school counselors will formally self-assess on an annual basis and our school counseling program is self-assessed as well. We have also created an Advisory Council, which is open to all teachers, counselors, administrators, school support staff, students, parents, and community stakeholders. New members are always welcome and encouraged to join our Advisory Council. An annual agreement is drawn up between administrators and counselors.

3. Delivery: Our school counseling program is delivered through both direct student services, at Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3 levels, and indirect student services, which includes behind-the-scenes research and consultations, along with collaboration and referrals.

4. Accountability: Through our extensive collection, analysis, assessment, evaluation, and communication of data, we aim to foster the highest standards of accountability. All stakeholders are invited to contribute to the accountability of the school counseling program. We are transparent in what we have done and constantly solicit community input for the continual improvement of our program. This is done through the Advisory Council and periodic surveys that are distributed to all stakeholders.

The Data We Use - And Why It Matters!

With our data-driven school counseling program at TMHS, we are looking at different types  of data, which are listed below. Why does this all matter? Of course, we need to make sure our school counseling program works and is effective. If we find that parts of it work, we keep those parts of the program and then we continue to improve upon what we have already built. However, if we find through our data-driven analysis that there are certain parts of the program that are not working as well, or that are not effective, then we use the data to enact change. Here are the three major types of data that we focus on at TMHS. They are not the only data we look at, but we focus much of our attention on these three types:

Participant Data

This is the "Who" data - it looks at the # of students, how often students participate, and for how long the students participate in an activity and/or counseling session.

Mindsets & Behavior Data (please click on this link for more detailed information.)

Measures the Attitudes, Knowledge, and Skills of students as a result of their participation in the school counseling program.

Outcome Data

Measures Achievement, Attendance, and Discipline based on classroom instruction, small group counseling, and individual counseling sessions.
